What Texas GCs actually need to carry

General Liability

$1M/$2M is the floor on most contracts. Required on virtually every commercial job in Texas.

Workers’ Compensation

Optional under Texas law — but most GCs require it from subs. Not carrying it is a liability risk.

Commercial Auto

Required if any vehicles are used for business. Personal auto doesn’t cover commercial use.

Umbrella / Excess

$1M–$5M over primary limits. Routinely required on larger public and commercial projects.

Builder’s Risk

Covers the structure under construction. Specify in your contract whether GC or owner carries it.

Tools & Equipment

Your GL doesn’t cover your tools. Add an inland marine or equipment floater for real protection.
